- A Mandalay Buddhist
Monastery is much more
integrated into the
community as we have
anywhere in the so called
"western world".
A Buddhist monastery in
Myanmar still also
functions as a monastery
school and a orphanage,
other Myanmar monasteries
run places for the elderly
and of course the monks try
to spend relive when
problems struck, but in the
Buddhist world no need to
confess first, they are not
as naive as Catholics.
In resent years there
came some business into the
monasteries, westerners
are looking for retreats to
switch off the upper region
and relax, that led to the
foundation of several
Buddhist retreats in the
Sagaing Hills and elsewhere,
it almost always is related
to a Buddhist temple and a
monastery. Life in a
Mandalay monastery is not
easy, you get up at 4am and
go to sleep around 8pm. No
TV, no video, no beer, no
wine, no cigarettes, no
drugs, no bam bam etc. could
be boring for some peoples.
Mandalay and the area
around, such as Sagaing,
Mingun, Monywa and other
places have plenty of
monasteries to seek refuge.
Actually it is common that
every male Myanmar spend
some time in a monastery and
every boy undergoes a
novitiate time and stays in
a monastery for a while,
there a plenty of small
festivals to make the ready
for the monastery and
deliver him to the place.
Myanmar hasn't change much
in the last 2 centuries.
One of the most
interesting Mandalay
monasteries is the so called
"teak monastery", a
structure completely made
from teak wood wood
including outstanding teak
carvings of Buddha statues
and other wooden art, that
was the place where King
Mindon died, after it was
moved out form the palace
and used as a monastery,
that's probably the most
interesting of all
monasteries |
|
in Mandalay. Myanmar
monasteries also
have a Tripitaka,
the Buddhist canon.
Some are in
possession of some
very old Tripitaka
written hundreds of
years ago.

At
Mandalay are
dozens of
monasteries
and some of
them
function as
a Buddhist
retreat, one
of the most
know is the
Thakawun
Monastery.
During the
reign of
King Thibaw
(1878-1885),
the King’s
celebrated
and
distinguished
Minister
Kinwun
Mingyi U
Gaung, after
his return
as the first
Myanmar
Envoy to the
West,
England,
France and
Italy,
constructed
the said
Thakawun
Monastery at
the cost of
Kyats
80,000/-.
At
the time, it
stands on
the plot No.
179 granted
by the King.
It is
situated in
the Eastern
Daywun
quarter of
Mandalay,
known as
Anaukpyin
area.
Thakawun
means the
place where
teak trees
grow.
This
monastery is
a merger of
Myanmar and
Western
style of
architecture
born out of
Kinwun
Mingyi’s
knowledge
and
experiences
gained
through his
visits to
the West.
He
seemed to be
enamoured
and
attracted by
West Minster
Abbey at the
St. James
palace and
also Roman
features of
architecture.
In the
north-west
corner, the
spiral
stair-case
can be found
which is a
rarely used
by Myanmar
architects.
Foreign-made
brass bolts
are used at
the main
doors and
windows of
the corner
rooms.
In the
north-east
of the
Thakawun
monastery,
there
is a
remarkable
inscription
about
the
bio-data
of
Kinwun
Mingyi
written
by
himself,
full
of
realistic
and
vivid
details
about
his
life
and
his
works.
It
is
known
as
Thakawun
Kyauksa
and
is
of
great
value
for
researchers
and
scholars. |

Buddhist

retreats
In the
Sagaing
Hills
opposite
Mandalay
on the other
side of the
mighty
Irrawaddy
are several
Buddhist
retreats
such as the
Pa Ba Gyaung
Sagaing
which is the
centre of
Buddhist
Theravada
Vipassana
Satthipathan
Meditational
Practice, Pa
Ba Gyaung is
one among
them.

Buddhist
meditation
retreats
Sagaing |
|
This one
of several
Buddhist
meditation
retreats
is more than
900
years old.
It is an
ideal spot
for
unperturbed
meditation
actually one
of the best
meditation
retreats.
Practice
meditation
in typical
Buddhist
Theravada
way
according to
Four Noble
Truths.
Buddhist
meditation
retreats in
the Mandalay
area, there
are also
others in
Yangon, are
doing a good
job in
meditative
practice.
Those places
create the
environment
for
meditation
and
relaxation.
It’s a time
for breathe
(Yoga), eat,
listen and
live
meditation
at a place
of peace and
tranquility.
A
Buddhist
meditation
center in
Mandalay or
elsewhere in
Myanmar
is the ideal
place to
learn about
and practice
Buddhist
meditation,
far away
from all the
influences
tearing your
thinking and
won’t get
you messed
up with all
kind of
everyday
nonsense.
What is
better as an
totally
exotic
environ,
detached
from
everywhere
to get your
mind up
again. Most
yoga and
meditation
classes have
a duration
of usually
one or two
hours per
week, that’s
a placebo
without deep
influence,
to get
yourself up
and running
again as
before it
needs some
real
performance
means get
yourself
into a
dreamlike
state to
switch off.
A Buddhist
meditation
retreat in
Myanmar is
sort of a
one-stop
strategy to
get things
done. A
serene
environment,
exotic and
exciting,
one that
makes you
feel good
and turns
thinking
destination
in a
different
direction,
the main
idea is to
detach you
from normal
and this is
exactly what
you get.
